Everyone has their own goals when pursuing music.
In the beginning, everyone must learn the same basic skills of reading music notation, building co-ordination on the keyboard, increasing listening skills with ear training. Music theory is the grammar of music and it is an integrated part of an overall music training program. Understanding how music is put together across all genres (styles) of music is fascinating and gives the student the power and knowledge to express any style of music.
Students are encouraged to take advantage of the examination systems offered by either the Royal Conservatory of Music or the British Columbia Conservatory of Music, but these goals by themselves are incomplete. Students are also encouraged to gain skill in jazz and popular styles of music as well as including “chording” which allows a student to “play by ear” to some more popular style music. I believe that the skills in both classical music and popular music compliment each other. There is no need to choose one style over another but to acquire skill in all areas.
